What Are The Side Effects Of Quitting Smoking?

These days smokers have may hassles to deal with – they face restrictions on where they can smoke, are ostracised by their friends and shunned from their homes, as well as being stigmatised by society on the whole. Not to mention the constant quit smoking message they are constantly confronted by. And while quitting smoking is definitely has its benefits – especially when considering the many negative effects that smoking has on a person’s health – but it’s not quite that simple. Smokers have to deal with the many effects of quitting smoking – and it’s not quite as easy as some people would have you believe.

What Are The Most Common Effects Of Quitting Smoking?

There are two main effects of quitting smoking: physical and psychological.

Physical symptoms include, of course, cravings. People crave the nicotine that their body has become used to. Another effect of quitting smoking is a messed-up sleeping schedule. Some people report that they are either very restless or very tired and either one can cause sleeping problems. And many people also develop headaches – while smoking causes headaches, an effect of quitting smoking is headaches! People also report that they typically gain weight – an effect of quitting smoking is an increased appetite so people end up eating more. People also have trouble concentrating due to a mix of the above symptoms – they can’t sleep or they’re having bad cravings and it affects them.

The psychological effects of quitting smoking can be just as hard to deal with, when compared to the actual withdrawal symptoms. The fluctuating levels of the chemical in your body can result in many different things occurring. The withdrawal symptoms that people who are quitting suffer from are similar to those of people getting over any other drug. Mild depression that lasts only a few days is one of the first that may develop. Feelings of irritability, anger and frustration are also common. The effects of quitting smoking can also result in anxiety and irritability as well. This is especially common in teenage smokers; teenagers being a bundle or hormones to start off with !

But of course these draw backs are nothing when compared to all the benefits that can come from quitting smoking. Firstly, within 15 years all of the increased health risks associated with smoking – lung cancer, respiratory issues, heart attacks will have returned the level of non-smokers, and secondly you will have whiter teeth, you no longer smell like smoke and you save large amounts of money every year.

However, while the negative effects of quitting smoking can be difficult to deal with at first, in the end it’s all worth it – you’ll be happier and healthier than ever!
