Friday, September 18th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedIf you’re thinking about stopping smoking you’re probably wondering what to expect when you stop – what are the quitting smoking side effects and can I avoid them? I’ll answer some of these questions right now. You can also find more information at: Quitting Smoking Side Effects.
Many of the side effects are really symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Smokers quickly become addicted to nicotine. It affects many parts of the body and does tend to make people feel somewhat relaxed.
As with heroin and other narcotics, once a person is addicted and they’ve become used to having the chemical in their body, they suffer side effects when it is withdrawn.
A very frequent side effect is a change in mood. Previously calm people who stop smoking often become irascible, easily annoyed and quick to anger. Others become depressed or anxious. Some people feel agitated and unable to concentrate.
Another common side effect is difficulty falling asleep or restless sleep.
Although these side effects sound pretty bad, remember that they only last for a few days. Of course it would be best not to experience any side effects and fortunately it is possible to minimize them.
Since many of the side effects are caused by nicotine withdrawal, it’s not surprising that some form of nicotine replacement cuts the cravings and prevent the side effects
Nicotine isn’t healthy for you, but nicotine alone is a lot better than cigarette smoke. Once you’ve addressed the psychological aspects of stopping smoking you can then taper off the nicotine at a rate that doesn’t cause discomfort.
Again, keep in mind that the worst of the negative side effects will be over in a week or so. It’s well worth going through them to become smoke-free. As soon as you stop you begin reaping the quitting smoking benefits. The great thing about the positive effects is that they’re permanent. In fact, they even [get better the longer you’re smoke-free.
