You might not know that devices called electronic cigarettes are around. They are also called e-cigarettes, and they look expensive at first, but they cost a lot less than regular cigarettes just as long. They look just like the real thing, and even have a glowing tip and release something with the look of smoke. However, they don’t burn, don’t cause air pollution the same way as a regular cigarette, and aren’t banned in no smoking zones. There are lots of people in many places choosing to stop smoking ordinary cigarettes and choosing electronic alternatives.

This new kind of smoking is still pretty new on the market. It was developed by a Chinese company in 2004, and has been getting more and more popular ever since. While it’s hard to find good sales information, the biggest manufacturer of these devices says it sold more than three hundred thousand in 2008. Those numbers tell us that many people are choosing to give up regular cigarettes. As people discover the difference that these devices could make in their lives, sales keep going up. The devices have even been listed in the top ten health trends of the past year. However, it may be difficult to learn if an e-cigarette is any healthier than regular tobacco.

An electronic cigarette looks just like a standard cigarettes, so it’s familiar to hold. They aren’t full of tobacco, though - the weight is mostly a battery. An e-cigarette also contains an LED. There’s a disposable filter holding a nicotine cartridge attached. The nicotine is dissolved in a chemical used in many personal grooming products called propylene glycol. This is also the substance that makes smoke in nightclub smoke machines. When you choose to take a drag, there’s a pressure sensor inside that switches on a heating coil. The substance inside the cigarette liquefies and is released in a form that looks much like smoke.

A strong cartridge has about the same amount of nicotine as regular strength cigarettes, but you get a lot more out of it - three hundred puffs, not fifteen. Cartridges won’t burn down if you don’t smoke them fast enough, either. The cigarette is ready to go when you need it, and by choosing the right level of concentration, you can control your nicotine intake. Every cartridge costs in the neighborhood of $1.50. E-cigarettes do tend to deliver lower concentrations of nicotine than regular cigarettes, which some people see as good and others see as bad.

Each puff releases a few micrograms of alcohol, nicotine, water, propylene glycol and some flavorings. Unlike regular cigarettes, however, the electronic cigarette contains few to zero carcinogens - the risk is similar to that of the nicotine patch, not that of smoking. Carbon monoxide and carcinogens in the air around you - second hand smoke - are minimized, and other people in the area won’t have problems. The fine mist may have the appearance of smoke to people nearby, but it won’t cause the same health problems.

Some even say that smoking e-cigarettes can assist you with quitting. There are no conclusive studies out there, but a slow decrease in concentration could help some people. Even if people continue to use the electronic cigarette, it’s a lot less dangerous than ordinary types, and it’s less expensive in the long run. At the moment, they can also be smoked indoors, because there is no flame or second hand smoke. Dental damage, unpleasant smells, and other smoking side effects are eliminated, leaving only the good parts. That means it’s superior to regular cigarettes in just about every way.

If you’ve been looking for something new, the e-cigarette might be just the thing you’ve been waiting for. It offers convenience, cleanliness and it’s cost effective. These cigarettes are being offered around the world, and sales are soaring. Take a look at this interesting technology and find out why it’s better than old fashioned cigarettes.
